Of the 184 cases we monitored and closed during this timeframe, we rated 125 cases satisfactory and 59 cases poor.

In this audit, we set out to determine whether the department’s drug interdiction processes provide effective means of preventing drugs from entering prison grounds, detecting and discovering drugs within prisons, and investigating the sources of discovered drugs. We also evaluated the department’s process for collecting and reporting data related to drug discoveries and performed transactional testing to assess reliability of the data. Finally, we reviewed the data to assess the impact of operational restrictions implemented in response to the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, on the introduction of drugs in prisons. In the report, we provide the department with 19 recommendations to improve its drug interdiction processes.
